Two uninjured in Big Lake aircraft crash

On 12-22-2018 at approximately 6:16 p.m., the Alaska State Troopers received a report of an aircraft accident on Big Lake near Burkshore Marina.

Investigation revealed Austin Joy, age 66 of Big Lake was attempting to land his Cessna A185F on a runway near his residence on Big Lake. Joy lost his landing lights and attempted a landing on the ice road as it was wider and easier to see in the dark. After touchdown the landing gear made contact with the snow berm causing his aircraft to flip over coming to rest on its top.

Joy and his passenger were uninjured and self-extricated from the aircraft. Aircraft recovery is underway.
