Outdoor Shooting Range Working Group

Dear Community Councils,

I am writing to you to let you know about Ordinance 18-086, adopted on September 4th, which established a working group to research outdoor commercial, educational , and non-profit shooting ranges. There are currently only select areas where there are any regulations for this land use and this group will advise the Assembly on possible future measures for these ranges as they are increasingly in conflict with residents. The working group will have an assortment of members with varying points of view on the issue to get the most equitable recommendations possible. There are a variety of positions on this board and we would greatly appreciate it if you would suggest this opportunity to anyone who might fill these positions well. Position descriptions and a link to the application form are below. Thank you for your help and don’t hesitate to ask any questions.

· Two representatives of commercial outdoor shooting facilities in the Matanuska-Susitna Borough

· One Senior official in law enforcement, or their designee

· One with expertise in environmental protection (preferably with knowledge of shooting related protection i.e. lead)

· One from the National Rifle Association (preferably with knowledge of shooting range design or safety)

· One from a local sport shooting or fish and game organization

· Two residents within ½ mile from an existing commercial outdoor shooting facility

· One at-large member
