Here is the latest update on the petition to incorporate Big Lake as a 2nd Class City, from the Local Boundary Commission:

The commission met on April 15, 2015 in Big Lake and granted the petitioners from Big Lake’s request to split the petitions. The City of Houston’s petition for annexation was approved and now that draft decision will be approved or amended by the commission at a public meeting on May 5, 2015 at 10 a.m. in the Atwood Building here in downtown Anchorage in room 1620. It will also be available via teleconference if you are interested by calling 1-800-315-6338 and using access code 94587.

The Big Lake petitioners asked for the commission to consider changing their recommendation from 2.57 mills of property tax to 3.09 to reflect the actual cost that residents currently pay to the Mat-Su Borough, and the borough will not be able or willing to collect if Big Lake incorporates. The commission granted this request and there will be a continuation of this hearing at a date that has not yet been determined. At that time, the commission will hear arguments and afterward convene a decisional meeting. Then they will meet again to approve the decision in a similar way to the meeting they are having for the Houston petition decision on May 5.

We will post more updates as they become available. If you would like to stay up-to-date with LBC matters, you can subscribe to their list server at http://list.state.ak.us/soalists/DCED-LocalBoundaryCommission/jl.htm
