Governor Walker Signs Bill to Designate Military Family Day

Military and VeteransGovernor Bill Walker signed into law yesterday House Bill 175, sponsored by Representative Bob Lynn, to designate November 1 of every year as Military Family Day.

“The men and women who serve in our military make tremendous sacrifices—and so do their family members,” said Governor Bill Walker. “We salute these heroes on the home front. Alaska is home to a number of military installations, so it’s only right that we set aside a day to honor the families who support and love those who serve.”

Among those who attended yesterday’s bill-signing ceremony was Sarah McRae. Her grandson, U.S. Marine Corps Staff Sergeant Thomas McRae, is a former Juneau resident who was seriously injured in 2012 by an improvised explosive device during his second tour of duty in Afghanistan. He also served three tours of duty in Iraq.

Sgt. McRae’s mother left Juneau for the east coast to care for her wounded son and his young daughter.

“Sgt. Thomas McRae and his family are a remarkable example of strength, sacrifice, resilience, dedication and love,” Governor Walker said. “I am so honored that Thomas’ grandmother, Sarah, joined us to mark this important day.”
