Project Update

Time for a project update and reminder about the upcoming Mat-Su Transportation Fair!

The team successfully completed Parks Highway, Phase 1, Lucus Road to Church Road.

Construction of Phase 2, the Church Road to Pittman Road got underway this spring in partnership with Knik Construction Company. The work for the 2016 construction season will focus on constructing the new northbound lanes, installation of highway lighting, and begin work on the mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) walls and bridge at the railroad overpass. Work on the frontage roads will also be part of the 2016 construction season scope of work. The project will shut down for the winter and resume in the spring of 2017 to complete the work on the southbound lanes, install the remaining highway lighting and signalization, and complete the railroad overpass bridge structure.

The team continues to refine the design for Phase 3, Pittman Road to Big Lake Road, and acquire needed rights-of-way. The acquisition team is working on fair market property appraisals, offers, and completing purchases. In addition, the team is working to relocate both busineses and residents affected by the project. In order to begin construction in 2018 as planned, the acquisitions must be substantially complete in the fall of 2017.

The project team will have the most up-to-date design at the next Mat-Su Transportation Fair to be held from 4 pm to 8 pm on Thursday, September 22, 2016 in Raven Hall, Alaska State Fairgrounds, 2075 Glenn Highway,Palmer . They told us at the Community Council meeting that this section of Parks Hwy is the most dangerous of all. Begs the question why they started the project on the other end, after Wasilla annexed those outlying properties.
