Veterans and Remembrance Day

AnnouncementsPress Release

WHEREAS, Veterans and Remembrance Day is our opportunity to honor our war veterans, and to acknowledge the origins of this November date which became a tradition at the end of the First World War; and

Twenty years later, in 1938, it became an official federal holiday; and

WHEREAS, the 11th day of November has become an occasion to show gratitude to the American men and women who defend our nation’s founding ideas, protect the innocent, and liberate the oppressed from tyranny and terror, and our allies in the Commonwealth Nations honor their service members who fought and died alongside those serving in the United States Armed Forces on this day; and

WHEREAS, we honor all Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines, Coast Guardsmen and Women, National Guard members, and Reservists who have served and are serving in the United States Armed Forces; and

WHEREAS, we are forever indebted to our veterans for their remarkable and brave service to Alaska and the United States of America, and we must never forget their selfless dedication and willingness to give their lives in defense of freedom.

NOW THEREFORE, I, Bill Walker, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF ALASKA, do hereby proclaim November 11, 2017 as:
