Celebrate Alaska Agriculture Day on May 5

Local Business(Palmer, AK) – Alaskans will celebrate Alaska Agriculture Day on Tuesday, May 5. On this day, Alaskans are encouraged to support local agriculture by seeking out and purchasing products produced in Alaska and educating youth about the vital role that agriculture plays in our economy.

Here are a few ideas from the Division of Agriculture on how to celebrate Agriculture Day:

• Join the 34,278 people who “like” the Alaska Grown Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/dnr.alaskagrown and learn about the exciting things Alaskans are producing around the state.
• Contact your local agriculture groups/chapters (such as FFA, Farm Bureau, Agriculture in the Classroom etc.) to see if they are hosting an event in your area.
• Sign up for a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program at a local farm.
• Buy and incorporate Alaska Grown products into your meals.
• If you are a farmer, consider asking a local school if you can visit a classroom to educate children about your operation and Alaska agriculture.
• Visit and thank a local farmer in person. To find a farm near you, check the Alaska Grown Source Book at http://dnr.alaska.gov/ag/sourcebook/s...x2014.html

A Visit to The Dentist

Local BusinessToday I had my first appointment with Tommy Knox, Big Lake's Dentist.

While almost everyone has had past experiences with dentists, some good and some not, I know that for many people, going to the dentist is something to be dreaded, and anxious feelings can arise. For this and other reasons, people put off going to the dentist, and their oral health suffers as a result. Poor oral health can lead to other, very serious problems. And it's certainly not something that will simply “go away.”

Obviously Dentists are people too, and each has his or her own style. This plays a role in the times that you need or know you should make an appointment. If you are not comfortable with your dentist (or other professional) then you should consider making the change. And change is often hard, one consideration being going from the known into the unknown. The alternative is for things to stay the same, which is lacking in positive progress.

Three Bears to open in Big Lake in former IGA space

Local BusinessFrom some recent stories here on The Big Lake Times, it looked as if Big Lake was going to lose its' store. The parent company, Omni, closed the store in Bethel and removed their website. I have some good news to share: I spoke with a V.P. of Three Bears by phone today. He confirmed that Three Bears will be operating a store in place of the soon-to-be-former IGA.

The store will close by Friday and reopen as Three Bears on 3 April 2015. In the meantime we can shop at our local Three Bears on Pittman or KGB. They are committed to serve Big Lake and the surrounding communities. "It's a win-win for everyone."

Everyone working at the new store will be the same smiling, friendly faces you see every day. Please show your support!
