Is Big Lake losing its grocery store?

Local BusinessThe recent closure of the Omni store in Bethel has raised the question: Will Big Lake lose its store?

We contacted Omni Enterprises at (907) 868-7855 and was told they have no statement for the press. We asked for a written statement. During a phone call to the store we were informed that no decision has been made, and they could use a few friendly faces.

"Call Me Tommy" is moving in

Local BusinessI had the honor of meeting Big Lakes New Dentist and crew a few days ago. Dr. "Call me Tommy", his wife Juanita, and crewmember Shannon were moving and setting up pieces and parts in his new suite in the Eastlake Mall, next to the IGA in the former Donna's Corner. He plans to begin seeing patients shortly, so call and make an appointment today, 892 KNOX. (907.892.5669)

When you meet him it's OK to call him Tommy. In fact, he would prefer it.

2014 Alaska State Fair Farm Family of the Year Announced

Local Business(Palmer, AK) – The Williams family of EagleSong Family Peony Farm has been selected by the Alaska agriculture community as the 2014 Alaska State Fair Farm Family of the Year. The Williams family will be honored at the Alaska State Fair on Thursday, August 21.

Michael and Paula Williams moved to a remote location in the Mt. Susitna area in 1994 (40 miles from the nearest road system) and started EagleSong Lodge. They operated the lodge until customer traffic decreased due to the decline in fishing in the area. Traffic slowed to the point where they had to close the lodge in 2009. With the lodge closed, Michael and Paula were looking for alternative ways to create income because they wanted to stay at EagleSong. One night, while flipping through TV channels, Michael came across a PBS special on a new trend taking hold of Alaska peony farming.
