Have You Seen This?

Community Have you seen a low-flying object, or something flying in a pattern? This reporter has been alerted to dogs barking, with no wild animals present. What is this?

Residents have reported one or more low and slow flying objects in the West Lakes area. If you live somewhere in the valley, please report these observations. See the previous post regarding the valley. Rumor has it that there is a group that has a number of very expensive devices. Perhaps this is merely an elaborate hoax, someone having fun with the public.

This is a cellphone capture of an incident submitted by a resident.

Early glitches with PFD website repaired

Community Anchorage, January 23, 2014 – There’s good news for Alaskans who already filed for their Permanent Fund Dividends (PFD) but were unable to donate to their favorite causes due to website glitches: Most of the issues are fixed and you can go back into your application and add or change your donations.

“We’ve heard from many Alaskans who couldn’t Pick.Click.Give. because of issues with the PFD website,” said Pick.Click.Give. Program Manager Heather Beaty. “We want to make sure that people who want to express their love for Alaska through their giving know that the system has been improved. It’s easy to go back to the PFD website and click on the green ‘Add or Change Your Pick.Click.Give. Donation’ button, and support organizations that help make Alaska a better place to live.”

Be Firewise, Big Lake.

Community Vlad K. submitted this: With the lengthening of the days, it's time to start considering ways to prepare for the coming Wildfire Season. These are the warm, dry days between the snow and ice melting, and the greening of Alaska. This article will look at ways to help you make your home, and your community, safe from wildfires.

What is FireWise?

FireWise is a program which helps people learn what they can do to protect their homes and families and live compatibly with wildfire. Homeowners are strongly encouraged to prepare before a wildfire.

Wildfires Happen, Be Prepared.

Quote of the Day

"Live your life so that the fear of death can never enter your heart. Love your life, perfect your life, beautify all things in your life. Seek to make your life long and in the service of your people.

Always give a word or a sign of salute when meeting or passing a friend, even a stranger, when in a lonely place. Show respect to all people and grovel to none. When you arise in the morning give thanks for the food and for the joy of living. If you see no reason for giving thanks, the fault lies only in yourself.

When it comes your time to die, be not like those whose lives are filled with the fear of death, so that when time comes they weep and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again in a different way. Sing your death song and die like a hero going home." --Tecumseh

Social media and Alaska's armchair sleuths impact Valley crime

Community "Alaska State Troopers may have a new four-man crime suppression unit. But the guys with the badges are merely the tip of a swarm of crime busters who've had enough of thieves stealing other people's stuff. Thousands of citizen sleuths have taken to social media to thwart the bad guys and attempt to find stolen trucks, guns, snowmachines, jewelry, kitchen cabinetry and more."

Pick. Click. Give to Your Library.

Community When filing for your Alaska Permanent Fund Dividend this year, consider Your Public Libraries. They are much more than just a place to check out books (not that there's anything wrong with that!): They are Community Resources, providing so much for our communities, far too much to list here.
