Services for The People

Community by Sammy Taylor

Rumor has it that the Big Lake transfer site will be closed Sundays and Mondays starting in February. It certainly has been liberal of the Borough Waste Management Division to have the local “dump” open seven days a week. Since the Waste Management Division must pay for itself (and currently is running in the red), I certainly understand the need to reduce the days of operation. What I don’t understand is why the Waste Management Division chose Sunday as a day of closure since it seems to be one of the busiest days at the site.

As our forefathers envisioned, government is supposed to be “of the people, for the people, BY the people.” However I don’t see that the current Waste Management Division made any effort to involve local citizens in this decision.
