Troopers investigate Houston burglary

Police BlotterOn 1/28/2018 at approximately 11:57 p.m., The Alaska State Troopers received a call about a Burglary on West Hobbit Road in Houston. The investigation revealed that an unidentified individual entered the residence unlawfully using force and stole a Toyo Heater, worth approximately $1100.

The investigation is ongoing at this time. The troopers are requesting that anyone with information on this to contact the Troopers at 352-5401.

Wasilla man injured in Big Lake crash

Police BlotterOn 01/28/2018, at approximately 12:30 p.m., Alaska State Troopers responded to the intersection of Hollywood Road and Pond Lily Lane for a report of a vehicle collision with injuries. Investigation revealed that a single vehicle left the roadway while westbound on Hollywood Road and rolled. The driver, Richard Wallace age 61 of Wasilla, was ejected from the vehicle and was partly pinned underneath the vehicle.

Wallace was cleared from the wreckage by West Lakes Fire Department personnel and transported to MATSU Regional Medical Center to be treated for possible injuries. Alcohol is suspected to be involved and the investigation is still in progress.

Big Lake woman arrested on warrant

Police BlotterOn 01/28/2018 at approximately 7:44 p.m., Alaska State Troopers contacted Jessica Wesley, age 28 of Big Lake, at a residence on Lucille Creek in Big Lake. Investigation revealed Wesley had a warrant for her arrest for Failure to Appear on the original charge of False Information to a Peace Officer. Wesley was arrested and remanded to the custody of the Mat-Su Pretrial Facility and held on $500 bail.

Big Lake man passes away

Police BlotterOn 01/23/2018 at approximately 5:42 p.m., Alaska State Troopers responded to a report of a death at a residence on Victor Road in Big Lake. Investigation revealed Tommy Copelin, age 69 of Big Lake, was deceased at the residence. The State Medical Examiner responded and took possession of the remains. Next of kin were on scene and notified. No foul play is suspected at this time.

Big Lake man charged with assault

Police BlotterOn 01/23/2018 at approximately 9 p.m., Alaska State Troopers responded to an address on Lucille Creek Drive in Big Lake for a report of a disturbance. Investigation revealed Jerome Phelps, age 33 of Big Lake, recklessly caused physical injury to a family member. Phelps was arrested and remanded to Mat-Su Pretrial Facility and held without bail.

Big Lake woman arrested on warrant

Police BlotterOn 1-17-18 at about 1:30 a.m., the Alaska State Troopers responded to a residence in Big Lake and contacted 24 year old Ashley Sowle. Investigation revealed Sowle had an outstanding warrant for her arrest for a Probation Violation. She was arrested and remanded to MSPT where she was held on $5000 bail.

Criminal Mischief / Trespass / Vandalism Big Lake

Police BlotterOn 01/15/2018, Alaska State Trooper dispatch was contacted by a State Park Employee to report a Destruction/Damage/Vandalism at a State Park in Big Lake. The complainant stated someone had entered the park and caused damage to several traffic control signs. The dollar amount of the items damaged was approximately $1000. The investigation is ongoing and the public is asked to contact Alaska State Trooper Dispatch at 352-5401 with any information.

Troopers seek information in Big Lake theft

Police BlotterOn 1/15/18 at approximately 3 p.m., AST responded to a residence on Big Lake Road where a building had been broken into and a truck engine had been stolen. Anyone with information about this crime is encouraged to contact AST at 745-2131.

Police BlotterOn 01/14/2018 at approximately 8:49 p.m., AST received a call about a theft on Creek Frontage Road in Big Lake. The investigation revealed that a propane tank was taken from the residence. The investigation is ongoing at this time. The Troopers are requesting that anyone with information on this to contact the Troopers at 352-5401.

Big Lake woman charged with vehicle theft

Police BlotterOn 1/9/2018 at approximately 8:32 a.m., a teal 1997 Nissan Sentra sedan was reported to be stolen from the owner's residence in Palmer.

On 1/10/2018 at approximately 1:00 a.m., AST located the stolen Nissan Sentra vehicle while patrolling the Walmart parking lot in Wasilla. An investigation revealed April D. Murray, 32 YOA of Big Lake, was the driver of the stolen vehicle. Murray was arrested for Vehicle Theft in the First Degree. Murray was remanded into custody at Matsu Pretrial in Palmer. The vehicle was released to the owner.

Troopers investigate Big Lake woman's death

Police BlotterOn 01/07/2018 at approximately 6:08 p.m., AST received a report of a deceased person on S Muskrat St in Big Lake. The investigation revealed a 25 year old female was deceased. State Medical Examiner has taken the body pending an autopsy. No foul play is suspected at this time and Next of Kin has been notified.

Man charged with 1st Degree Murder in Big Lake woman's death

Police BlotterUpdate: On 1-3-18 at approximately 1:00 p.m., Anthony Smith was arraigned at the Palmer Courthouse. He continues to be held with bail set at $250K and a Court approved Third Party Custodian required. In addition to the Murder 1st Degree charged, after consultation with the Palmer District Attorney’s Office, an additional charge of Assault in the 4th Degree was added based on the investigation of events that prompted a prior AST response to the residence that morning. Troopers had responded to a disturbance at the Big Lake residence on 1/1/18 at 0218 hours.

In addition to the ongoing criminal investigation. AST is conducting a comprehensive review of our initial response to this residence.

Update: The deceased has been positively identified by the State Medical Examiner’s Office as Amy Smith, 37 of Wasilla. On 1/2/18 an autopsy was conducted on Amy Smith and the results of the autopsy indicated the cause of death was homicide. At approximately 4 p.m. on 1/2/2018, members of the “B” Detachment Criminal Suppression Unit arrested Anthony Smith, 38 of Wasilla, for Murder in the First Degree. Smith was remanded to the Mat-Su Pretrial facility where he will be held without bail. Investigation by Palmer GIU is ongoing. Amy Smith’s next of kin has been notified.

Talkeetna man faces charges in Big Lake assault

Police BlotterOn 1/3/18, at 3:05 a.m., State Troopers responded to a residence in Big Lake for a report that an unknown male had barged into the house, intoxicated, and was causing a disturbance.

Investigation revealed that John B. Wilson, 54 yoa of Talkeetna, had crashed his vehicle nearby on Hollywood Road while under the influence, then walked to the home believing his fiancée was there and had unlawfully entered the residence without permission. While inside the residence he assaulted a female by placing her in fear of injury and had damaged property.

After being arrested, Wilson refused to provide a sample of his breath for analysis and was additionally charged with Refusal. Wilson was remanded to Mat-Su Pretrial on the above 5 charges with bail set at $500 cash.

Police BlotterUpdate: The deceased has been positively identified by the State Medical Examiner’s Office as Amy Smith, 37 of Wasilla. On 1/2/18 an autopsy was conducted on Amy Smith and the results of the autopsy indicated the cause of death was homicide. At approximately 1600 on 1/2/2018, members of the “B” Detachment Criminal Suppression Unit arrested Anthony Smith, 38 of Wasilla, for Murder in the First Degree. Smith was remanded to the Mat-Su Pretrial facility where he will be held without bail. Investigation by Palmer GIU is ongoing. Amy Smith’s next of kin has been notified.
