Houston man facing charges

Police BlotterOn 05/03/2017 at approximately 1:27 am, Alaska State Troopers initiated a traffic stop on a 2008 Harley Davidson motorcycle for a moving violation on Parks Hwy near Vine Road in Wasilla. The motorcycle failed to stop at the direction of a peace officer and continued to drive recklessly northbound on the Parks Hwy with speeds approaching 100 MPH.

The motorcycle stopped near Big Lake Road and the driver was identified as Ethan Atkins, age 25 of Houston. Further investigation revealed Atkins to be driving under the influence of alcohol. Atkins was arrested and remanded to the custody of the Mat-Su Pretrial Facility and held on $1000 bail.

Big Lake woman charged with Felony DUI

Police BlotterOn 4/28/17 at approximately 2:45 pm Troopers stopped a 2006 Dodge pickup on the Glenn Highway near Mile 28 following a REDDI report of a vehicle which had rear ended another vehicle in Wasilla and then left the scene.

Troopers contacted Lily McCord age 46 of Big Lake. McCord was arrested for DUI and DWLR and was subsequently found to have 2 prior convictions within the last 10 years for DUI. McCord was remanded to the Mat Su Pretrial Facility on $10000 bail and a court approved 3rd party.

Talkeetna man arrested on warrant

Police BlotterOn 04/24/17 at 12:40 am, AST performed a traffic stop on a maroon 2004 Saturn for an equipment violation on the Talkeetna Spur Road in Talkeetna. Investigation revealed the driver, Luis Rodriquez age 32 of Talkeetna, had an outstanding warrant for his arrest for failure to comply with ASAP for a prior DUI. Rodriguez was arrested for his warrant and transported to the MSPT facility in Palmer where he was remanded into custody and held on $1,000 bail.

Willow man arrested on warrant

Police BlotterOn 04/23/17 at 5:40 pm, AST performed a traffic stop on a silver 2003 Dodge pick-up for an equipment violation on Willow-Fishhook Road near Deception Creek in Willow. AST recognized an occupant of the vehicle to be Kiprian Reutov, age 31 of Willow, who had an outstanding warrant for his arrest for probation violation. Reutov was arrested for the warrant and transported to the MSPT facility in Palmer where he was remanded into custody and held on $1,000 bail with a court approved third party condition.

Troopers Warn of Scam

Police BlotterOn April 8th, 2017 at 4:24 pm, The Alaska State Troopers received a report of a telephonic fraud scam that has effected multiple victims. Upon further investigation, numerous individuals have contacted the Alaska State Troopers seeking clarification about multiple phone calls they had received where the caller identifies themselves as the Alaska State Troopers and states the person called, missed a court appearance, and/or has a warrant. The individuals then talk the victim through purchasing a prepaid debit card and providing the access number. Currently, this scam has focused on the Green Dot prepaid card. Victims are instructed to purchase multiple cards totaling thousands of dollars and then providing the access numbers over the phone. The suspects have a phone number to which people can call that has an elaborate voicemail identifying themselves as the Alaskan State Troopers with numbered options to press which are then forwarded to the suspects. This is a scam which the Alaska State Troopers are currently investigating.

The Alaska State Troopers do not take payment except for records requests, background checks, and similar services, and only in person. Anyone that is contacted by someone stating they are an Alaska State Trooper and requests payment in any form is highly encouraged to contact the Fairbanks Trooper Post immediately before processing any form of payment. Palmer woman arrested in Houston

Police BlotterOn 04/04/17 at 2309 hours, AST performed a traffic stop on a red 1986 Chevy pick-up near mile 55 of the Parks Highway in Houston for speeding. Investigation revealed a passenger, Christina Hawkins age 23 of Palmer, provided AST with a false name regarding her identity regarding a seatbelt citation.

AST was able to determine her true identity which revealed she had outstanding warrants for her arrest for FTA to change of plea hearings for the original charges of Driving in Violation of an Instructional Permit, Failure to maintain liability insurance, and Theft in the 4th Degree.

Hawkins was arrested for the original charge of Providing False Information and her outstanding warrants. She was transported to the MSPT facility in Palmer where she was held on $1,500 bail.

Wasilla man arrested in Houston

Police BlotterOn 4/3/17 at approximately 11:25 am Alaska State Troopers responded to Hawk Lane in Houston for a report that Vern Powell, age 28 of Wasilla was in the area. Powell had an outstanding warrant for failure to remand on the original charge of Fail to Stop at the Direction of a Peace Officer.

When AST attempted to make contact Powell fled on foot into the woods behind Houston High School. AST with the help of AWT located Powell and took him into custody without incident. Powell was transported to MSPT where he was remanded on the warrant with no bail.

Trapper Creek man arrested

Police BlotterOn 03/28/17 at 8:04 pm, AST responded to a residence near mile 7 of Petersville Road in Trapper Creek for a disturbance. Investigation revealed Charles Franzen, age 29 of Trapper Creek, recklessly placed 2 family members in fear of serious physical injury by means of a dangerous instrument, physically assaulted the same family members, and damaged personal property during the incident.

Franzen was arrested for the original charges of Assault in the 3rd Degree x 2 counts, Assault in the 4th Degree x 2 counts, and Criminal Mischief in the 5th Degree. Franzen was transported to the MSPT facility in Palmer where he was held without bail.

Anchorage man arrested in Houston

Police BlotterOn 3/26/2017, at approximately 9:38 pm, Alaska State Troopers responded to Twin Lakes in Houston. Troopers contacted Caleb Walls, age 31, of Anchorage. Walls had outstanding arrest warrants for no bail for Assault and $500 cash bail for Contempt of Court. Walls was remanded to MSPT.

Big Lake man arrested on warrant

Police BlotterOn 3/24/17, Palmer Wildlife Troopers contacted Joby W. Craig, 48 yoa of Big Lake, during a traffic stop on the Parks Highway within the traffic safety corridor. Craig was found to be operating his vehicle with a revoked drivers license and to have a $100 warrant for his arrest on the original charge of DWLR. Craig was arrested and remanded to Mat-Su Pretrial on $100 bail and was issued a citation for driving with a revoked license.

Trooper-Involved Shooting closes Parks Highway, K-9 and Suspect Killed

Police BlotterOn 3-26-2017 at approximately 2:50 am, AST attempted a traffic stop on a vehicle for a moving violation in the area of Bogard and Helen. The vehicle, a Subaru Legacy, failed to yield and drove in speeds in excess of the posted speed limit. After approximately 45 minutes, the Subaru stopped after running over spike strips deployed by AST near mile post 45.5 of the Parks Highway. The driver of the Subaru exited the vehicle, ignored commands from AST and attempted to flee. An AST K9 was deployed. The driver turned and fired a handgun. The AST K9 was shot. AST returned fire, striking the suspect.

The suspect was transported to Mat-Su Regional Medical Center, however, succumbed to his injuries. The man was identified as Justin Smith, 36 of Wasilla. It was determined that Smith had two active arrest warrants out of Anchorage: Assault in the Second Degree ($20,000) and Probation Violation (no bail).

Smith's next of kin have been notified. The Alaska Bureau of Investigation is taking over case responsibility for the Trooper-involved shooting. Following the shooting, the Parks Highway was closed for investigative purposes and has since reopened. No Troopers were injured.

The AST K9 succumbed to its injuries. The Trooper(s) involved will not be identified until the completion of the standard 72-hour administrative leave, per department policy. No further information is available at this time. Investigation continues.

Troopers seek information in Willow burglary

Police BlotterOn 03/25/2017 at approximately 5:29 pm, Alaska State Troopers responded to an address on N Lo-An Drive in Willow for a report of a burglary. A 36 year old Willow residence called to report an unknown suspect(s) unlawfully entered her residence and stole over $1000 in property to include numerous firearms. Estimated value of property stolen is approximately $10,000. Anyone with information related to this incident is urged to contact AST at 352-5401 or Crime Stoppers at 745-3333.

Big Lake man arrested on warrant from Idaho

Police BlotterOn March 22, 2017 at approximately 3:45 pm Alaska State Troopers conducted a traffic stop at Mile 48 of the Parks Highway. Investigation revealed the driver, Adam Casqueira, 32 of Big Lake, had an extraditable warrant from Idaho.

Troopers placed Casqueira under arrest and transported him to Mat-Su Pretrial where he was remanded and held without bail.

Trapper Creek woman arrested on warrants

Police BlotterOn 3/16/17 at approximately 3:47 pm, 32 year old Trapper Creek resident Sheyanne Strong turned herself in at the Palmer Trooper Post. Strong had an outstanding arrest warrant for Sexual Assault of a Minor in the 2nd Degree x 4 and Distribution of indecent Material to Minors.

Strong was arrested and remanded to the Mat Su Pretrial facility. Bail was set as indicated on the warrant at $25,000 cash and Court Approved Third party.

Houston man arrested on warrants

Police BlotterOn 3/15/2017, at approximately 12:08 am, Alaska State Troopers responded to Hawk Ln in Houston. Troopers contacted Vincent Kunayak, age 43, of Houston. Kunayak had an outstanding arrest warrant for $2500 for Probation Violation, for the original charges of Disorderly Conduct and Resisting Arrest . Kunayak was remanded to MSPT.
