Big Lake Woman Arrested for Assault.

Police BlotterOn 03/20/2014 at approximately 9:50 p.m., Alaska State Troopers responded to a residence on Apryl Lane in Big Lake for a report of a disturbance. Investigation revealed Victoria LaPorte, age 19 of Big Lake, recklessly caused physical injury to a family member. Further, LaPorte was under the influence of alcohol and under the age of 21. LaPorte was arrested and remanded to the custody of the Mat-Su Pretrial Facility and held without bail.

Big Lake men arrested

Police BlotterOn March 17th, 2014 at approximately 8:24 p.m., the Alaska State Troopers were dispatched to report of two intoxicated males near Hollywood Road and Big Lake Road, Big Lake. Troopers located two males in the area. Investigation revealed Harry M. Nose, age 36 of Big Lake, was located on Hollywood Road and had an active misdemeanor warrant for his arrest for Failure to Comply with ASAP Probation for the original charge of 2nd ASAP PTRP on Assault IV. Alexie L. Nose, age 30 of Big Lake, was located at a residence on Hollywood Road and had an active misdemeanor for Failure to Satisfy Judgment PTRP ASAP for the original charge of DV Assault. Harry was remanded to the Mat-Su Pretrial Facility where he was on $5000 bail. Alexie was remanded to the Mat-Su Pretrial Facility where he was on $500 bail.

DUI, Driving in Violation of License Restriction, Probation Violation

Police BlotterOn 03/02/14 at 11:25 p.m., Alaska State Troopers with the Bureau of Highway Patrol South-Central Team, contacted the driver of a vehicle who had stopped for mechanical issues in a parking lot near the Parks Hwy and Big Lake Rd near Big Lake. Investigation revealed the driver, Coal P. Phillips, age 28 of Wasilla, was driving under the influence of alcohol. Further investigation revealed Phillips was on probation with conditions not to consume alcohol and had a restriction on his license requiring an Alcohol Ignition Interlock Device. There was no Alcohol Ignition Interlock Device installed on the vehicle. Phillips was arrested for DUI, Violation of License Restriction, and Probation Violation. Phillips was transported and remanded to the Mat-Su Pre-Trial Facility and held without bail.

Big Lake man arrested

Police BlotterOn 03/15/2014 at approximately 11:30 p.m., Alaska State Troopers responded to a residence located near Moonrise in Big Lake for a report multiple gunshots fired at the residence. Investigation revealed Paul J. Meixner, age 38 of Big Lake, fired multiple gunshots at the victim's residence then fled the scene in a Ford Bronco. Shortly after, Meixner was located in the area and placed into custody. Meixner was charged with one count of Misconduct Involving a Weapon in the Second Degree and Assault in the Third Degree. Meixner was arrested and transported to Mat Su Pretrial. Bail was set at $15,000 cash, and a court approved third party.

Man arrested, charged with numerous thefts.

Police BlotterOn 3-15-2014, at about 2:27 a.m., Alaska State Troopers responded to the area of Gail Street and Lucille Street for a report of a person stealing items from vehicles. Alaska State Troopers and Wasilla Police Officers tracked the suspect for several miles in the snow. A Wasilla Police Officer and K-9 "Marshal" were instrumental in the apprehension of Charles Hedgers, age 21 of Wasilla. Investigation revealed Hedgers had stolen a pickup truck and various items from vehicles in the neighborhood.

Members of the Criminal Suppression Unit additionally discovered Hedgers was responsible for several thefts spanning two months. As a result, Hedgers was additionally charged with 18 counts of Theft in the 2nd degree and four counts of Misconduct Involving Weapons in the 3rd degree for possessing a concealable firearm after being convicted of a felony. During the investigation the Criminal Suppression Unit recovered 14 stolen firearms and approximately $10,000 worth of stolen property. Hedgers was remanded to Mat Su Pretrial and held without bail.

Search and Rescue

Police BlotterOn 3/11/2014 at 5:21 a.m., AST received a report that Debora Underwood, age 58 of Big Lake, was lost on a snowmobile near the Papoose Twin Lakes area. At about 0850, Helo 3 was dispatched and located Underwood walking near Butterfly Lake. Although the snowmobile had overturned and Underwood had to spend the night in the woods, she was warm and did not require medical attention. Underwood was airlifted back to her camp without incident.

Officer Involved Shooting Update

Police BlotterOn 3/9/14 at approximately 8:37 p.m., a citizen called Mat-Com Dispatch Center to Report Every Dangerous Driver Immediately (REDDI). The citizen indicated there were two intoxicated males in a white Chevrolet pickup, which pulled into a parking lot at the intersection of the Parks Highway and the Palmer Wasilla Highway. The citizen provided the license plate number for the pickup truck. Mat-Com Dispatchers broadcasted a locate to both Wasilla Police Officers and Alaska State Troopers. A nearby Alaska State Trooper found the suspect pickup truck at approximately 8:45 p.m. in a parking lot at 1501 East Parks Highway. The Trooper parked his marked patrol vehicle behind the pickup, which was occupied by two males. As the State Trooper knocked on the side of the pickup to contact the occupants, it drove off and circled around several small businesses in the area.

Officer Involved Shooting

Police BlotterAt approximately 9:07 p.m. on 03/09/2014, an Alaska State Trooper and a Wasilla Police officer were involved in a shooting near the Seward Meridian Parkway stemming from a vehicle failing to stop at the direction of a police officer. The contact was initiated after Alaska State Troopers received a report of an impaired driver. The driver of the suspect vehicle was pronounced dead on scene and the passenger sustained a non-life threatening injury. The trooper and police officer were not injured in the incident. Investigators from the Alaska Bureau of Investigations and Wasilla Police Department are investigating the incident. The Alaska Bureau of Investigations has assumed the responsibility of lead investigating agency. No other information is available at this time.

Crash shuts down Parks Highway, leads to arrest

Police BlotterOn 03-07-14, at 9:20 p.m., Alaska State Troopers with the Bureau of Highway Patrol, Palmer Patrol Troopers and Mat-Su Fire and EMS responded to a motor vehicle collision on the Parks Hwy at mile 49. This motor vehicle collision occurred within the Parks Hwy Safety Corridor. Investigation on scene revealed Joanna L. Fulton, age 55, of Big lake was traveling southbound on the Parks Hwy at mile 49 in her 1992 Lincoln Town Car and was negotiating a right hand curve in the roadway. Fulton was unable to successfully negotiate the curve and her vehicle traveled into the northbound lane of travel where it struck a northbound 2008 Chevrolet Silverado being operated by Stephen W. Caverly, age 41 of Wasilla. Caverly was able to take evasive action to avoid a direct head on collision, but the vehicles still struck in a side swipe collision. Fulton was determined to have been operating her vehicle was impaired by alcohol and she was arrested for DUI. Troopers located two open alcoholic beverage containers in Fulton's vehicle. Fulton was also found to be on Felony Probation which restricted her from consuming alcoholic beverages. Fulton was also arrested for a Probation Violation. All parties in Caverly's vehicle were released on scene. Fulton was transported to Mat-Su Pretrial where she was held without bail for the DUI and Probation Violation charges. The Parks Hwy was temporarily shut down while both vehicles were removed from the roadway.

Big Lake man arrested for Indecent Exposure

Police BlotterOn 03/08/2014 at approximately 5 p.m., Alaska State Troopers responded to Randall Rd. in Wasilla for a report of a male exposing himself in public. Investigation revealed Brent Ladd, age 24 of Big Lake, gave Troopers three false names and was also arrested for indecent exposure and disorderly conduct. Ladd was remanded without bail to the Mat-Su Pretrial Facility.

Big Lake man Arrested

Police BlotterOn 03/06/14 at approximately 10 p.m., Alaska State Troopers responded to a residence near Musk Ox Street in Big Lake after receiving a report of a disturbance. On scene, State Troopers contacted Brandon Schatz, age 38, of Big Lake. Investigation revealed Schatz fired a handgun five times at a neighbor. Schatz was arrested for five counts of Misconduct Involving Weapons in the Second Degree, six counts of Assault in the Third Degree and Misconduct Involving Weapons in the Fourth Degree. Schatz was transported to the Mat-Su Pretrial Facility and remanded into their custody with no bail. No injuries were sustained.

Police BlotterOn 3/04/14 at 4:32 the Alaska State Troopers conducted a traffic stop near Big lake Rd / Big lake Lodge Rd on a 1972 green Ford pick-up truck for a broken windshield and non-use of seat belt. Investigation revealed driver Matthew Unger age 55 of Big Lake had a revoked license. License was revoked for previously driving revoked. Unger was issued a misdemeanor citation and the vehicle was released to a licensed driver.

Police BlotterOn 03/3/2014 at approximately 1:18 a.m., Alaska State Troopers conducted a traffic stop on a 1993 Subaru Legacy for an equipment violation near mile 48 of the Parks Highway in Wasilla. Investigation revealed Editha F. Causey-Higgins, age 31 of Houston, was operating the vehicle while her license was suspended. Causey-Higgins was issued a criminal citation for Driving While License Suspended with a court date and released from the scene. The vehicle was released to a family member.

Big Lake Man arrested, charged with DWLR, Probation Violation

Police BlotterOn 3/2/14, at 5:00 a.m., Troopers responded to a REDDI report on Greensward Drive near Pittman Road. Troopers contacted Michael Reagan, 42 of Big Lake, during the investigation. During the investigation it was determined that Reagan was driving while his license was revoked and that he was on felony probation and was in violation of his probation conditions. Reagan was arrested and remanded into Mat Su Pretrial where he was held without bail.

Police BlotterOn 03/2/2014 at approximately 10:43 p.m., Alaska State Troopers conducted a traffic stop on a 1986 Honda Accord for an equipment violation at mile 49 of the Parks Highway in Wasilla. Investigation revealed Jordan N. Prendergast, age 29 of Big Lake, was operating the vehicle while his license was revoked. Prendergast was issued a criminal citation for Driving While License Revoked with a court date, and released from the scene.
