DWLR

Police BlotterOn 03/2/2014 at approximately 10:43 p.m., Alaska State Troopers conducted a traffic stop on a 1986 Honda Accord for an equipment violation at mile 49 of the Parks Highway in Wasilla. Investigation revealed Jordan N. Prendergast, age 29 of Big Lake, was operating the vehicle while his license was revoked. Prendergast was issued a criminal citation for Driving While License Revoked with a court date, and released from the scene.

Big Lake Man arrested

Police BlotterOn 3/2/14 at 2:56 p.m., Alaska State Troopers stopped a red 1997 Dodge Dakota pick-up truck for speeding near MP 4.5 of the Big Lake Road and made contact with a passenger in the vehicle who was identified as Keith Paul Constantine, age 20 of Big Lake. Investigation revealed Constantine had an outstanding warrant for his arrest for the original charge of Theft IV. Constantine was arrested, transported to and remanded in MSPT with his bail set at $100.00 Cash / Corporate.

Big Lake Couple Arrested

Police BlotterOn 03/02/14 at 1705 hours, Alaska State Troopers with the Bureau of Highway Patrol South-Central Team, conducted a traffic stop on a silver Honda Pilot reported as a REDDI vehicle near mile 54 of the Parks Hwy near Houston. Investigation revealed the driver, Melissa J. Schachle, age 33 of Big Lake, was driving under the influence of alcohol, with a 2 year old child in the car. Schachle was arrested for DUI and Endangering the Welfare of a Child in the 1st Degree. Schachle was transported and remanded to the Mat-Su Pre-Trial Facility with bail set at $1000. Further investigation revealed a passenger, Justin E. Corns, age 27 of Big Lake, had consumed alcohol in violation of his conditions of probation. Corns was arrested for Probation Violation and remanded to the Mat-Su Pre-Trial Facility and held without bail.

Big Lake Man arrested

Police BlotterOn 03-01-14, at 5:14 a.m., Alaska State Troopers with the Bureau of Highway Patrol responded to the gas station at the intersection of the Parks Hwy and the Palmer Wasilla Hwy for a REDDI (Report Every Dangerous Driver Immediately). The complainant advised a white Ford F150 had been driving on the Palmer Wasilla Hwy where it crashed into the raised medians and was unable to maintain a lane of travel. Troopers contacted the driver of the Ford and he was identified as Raymond P. Pendergast Jr, age 42, of Big Lake. An investigation revealed Pendergast was operating the vehicle while impaired by alcohol and he was placed under arrest for DUI. Pendergast was later requested to provide a sample of breath for chemical testing as required by law which he refused to do. Pendergast was subsequently charged with refusal of a chemical test. Pendergast was then transported and remanded into the Mat-Su Pretrial Facility where he was held on $10,000 bail plus a court approved third party.

No Motor Vehicle Insurance

Police BlotterOn 03/02/2014 at approximately 2:44 p.m., Alaska State Troopers conducted a traffic stop on a red 1991 Chevrolet Lumina at Mile 1 of Big Lake Road in Houston for an equipment violation. Investigation revealed Jessica Clayton, age 31 of Palmer, was driving with no motor vehicle insurance. Clayton was issued a misdemeanor citation and released from the scene.

Sex Crimes

Police BlotterThe Alaska Bureau of Investigations, Special Crimes Investigations Unit (SCIU), was formed in February of 2014. The unit's primary mission is to investigate cases involving commercial sexual exploitation and human trafficking. Upon being formed, the unit received information about a male who was exploiting several women between and Anchorage and the Mat-Su Valley who were in the sex trafficking trade.

During the course of their investigation, investigators were able to identify the male as Jeron Mason Batts, age 33, of Anchorage. Investigators also learned that Batts would procure patrons of the sex trafficking trade for the women who worked for him and in return would receive either a portion or the entire proceeds for the sexual acts performed by the women. At least one of the women who worked for him reported that Batts threatened her with physical force if she did not perform.

Police BlotterOn 02/28/2014 at approximately 3:29 p.m., Alaska State Troopers conducted a traffic stop on a 2007 Pontiac Grand Prix for speeding on Beaver Lake Road near Wolf Road in Big Lake. Investigation revealed Amanda Holcomb was driving while her license was suspended. Holcomb was issued a misdemeanor citation and released with a licensed driver.

Big Lake Man arrested

Police BlotterOn February 28th, 2014 at approximately 3:42 p.m. the Alaska State Troopers conducted a traffic stop on a white 1994 Lincoln Continental for a moving violation. Investigation revealed Zachary S. Cutler, age 44 of Big Lake, was impaired while operating the vehicle, had a revoked drivers license, and gave a false name to Troopers while the investigation was being conducted. Further investigation revealed there was an infant child in the vehicle while he was operating it while he was impaired. In addition, Zachary had an active warrant for FTA for arraignment on the original charge of DWLR. A passenger in the vehicle, Armando Velador-Padilla, age 39 of Wasilla, had an active warrant for FTA for arraignment for the original charge of DWLR. Cutler was remanded to the Mat-Su Pre-Trial Facility where he was held on $4000.00 bail. Velador-Padilla was remanded to the Mat-Su Pretrial Facility where he was held on $500.00 bail.

Motor Vehicle Collision - Non Injury

Police BlotterOn 02/26/2014 at approximately 7:52 a.m., Alaska State Troopers responded to mile 75 Parks Hwy for a report of single vehicle rollover. Investigation revealed Dakota McCants, age 21 of Willow, was south on the Parks Hwy in a 99 Chevy 2 door. McCants swerved to avoid a moose in the roadway, hit a stop sign, and overturned into the ditch. McCants was uninjured in the accident and was reported to be wearing his seatbelt.

Murder in Quinhagak

Police BlotterOn February 3rd, Bethel Alaska State Troopers were advised that a body was found off of a trail near Quinhagak. Alaska State troopers responded and confirmed that there was a body near the end of the new runway in Quinhagak. Positive identification had not been confirmed at that time. ABI investigators, as well as a Crime Scene Technician from Anchorage, responded to further investigate.

The next day, investigators with ABI along with a crime scene technician arrived in Bethel. They attended a briefing and were then transported to Quinhagak where they met up with the on scene troopers. During the initial investigation, the deceased was positively identified as Lisa Johnson and next of kin was notified. The body was transported to the State Medical Examiners Office for an autopsy.

Big Lake Man arrested while Hitch Hiking

Police BlotterOn 02/20/14 at approximately 5:53, Alaska State Troopers stopped to check on a hitch hiker near mile 38 of the Seward Hwy. The hiker was identified as Andrew Butcher (age 34 of Big Lake). Investigation revealed Butcher had two outstanding AST Warrants; one for $2500 and the other for $1000. Butcher was arrested on the warrants and remanded to Seward Jail.

Big Lake Woman Arrested

Police BlotterOn 02/20/2014, at approximately 9:50 p.m., Alaska State Troopers responded to a gas station on Seward Meridian Parkway and the Palmer-Wasilla Highway, in Wasilla, for a report of a woman causing a disturbance. Troopers contacted Victoria LaPorte, age 19, of Big Lake, who had an outstanding arrest warrant for Failure to Appear, original charge of Harassment I. LaPorte was arrested and transported to the Mat-Su Pretrial Facility where she remanded on $50 bail.

Houston Woman Arrested

Police BlotterOn 2/20/14 at approximately 2100 hours Alaska State Troopers with the Criminal Suppression Unit arrested Rachel Johnson, 29, of Houston on an outstanding misdemeanor warrant. Johnson was contacted at a residence on King Arthur Dr. in Houston during an ongoing burglary and theft investigation. Johnson was taken into custody and transported to Mat-Su Pretrial facility where she was held on $500 bail.

Vehicle Theft in Meadow Lakes

Police BlotterOn 2/18/14 at 6:29 a.m., AST received a report of a stolen vehicle from the Meadow Lakes area. It was reported that a 2001 Dodge Dakota was stolen from the victim's residence. The vehicle is gray in color and has an Alaska license plate with EAR113. If anyone has information about the vehicle it is encouraged that they contact the Alaska State Troopers at 352-5201.

Troopers seek information in burglary

Police BlotterOn 02/18/14 at 8:00 a.m., Alaska State Troopers responded a neighborhood off Pittman Road in Wasilla for report of someone having gone through several unlocked vehicles in the neighborhood. After Troopers arrived on scene, they made contact with a victim, who reported that his green 2009 Chevy Aveo had been stolen from his driveway during the night. The 2009 Chevy Aveo was later recovered nearby on W. Peninsula Dr and N. Tote St in Wasilla and was released to the owner. Further investigation revealed someone had entered a garage at a residence located nearby and stole approximately 15 firearms, along with other miscellaneous items. Anyone with information should contact the Alaska State Troopers at 745-2131. Investigation is continuing.
