Reported Scam

Police BlotterAn elderly woman in the Fairbanks area contacted the Alaska State Troopers about a "too good to be true" opportunity that was offered to her. It was reported that two men contacted her about the "American Awards" out of Las Vegas. She was told she was selected to be awarded $5,000. The money would be credited to her credit card but they needed her to give them a $250 money pack from Wal-Mart to complete the transaction. They advised her that she would need to show up alone at a location to do a hand off. A credit card company confirmed that these credits to cards do not occur. The woman not only saved herself from being a victim of a scam but she also came forward with the information so others could avoid victimization as well.

While this incident was reported out of Fairbanks, the Alaska State Troopers advise all Alaskans to be leery of these types of interactions with strangers.
