Improper Use of Registration

Police BlotterOn 4/18/2014 at approximately 2:10 a.m., Alaska State Troopers stopped a red 1989 Chevrolet pick-up truck on the Parks Highway near mile 51 (which is within the Parks Highway Safety Corridor) for an equipment violation. Investigation revealed Dusten Hayes, age 28 of Wasilla, was driving with improper vehicle registration. Hayes was issued a criminal citation to appear in court at a later date and released on scene.

Police BlotterOn 04/17/14 at approximately 4:41 p.m., Alaska State Troopers with the Bureau of Highway Patrol conducted a traffic stop on a brown Ford Bronco on Big Lake Road near Meadowood Drive, Houston. The driver John Stogsdill, age 38, of Wasilla was not wearing a seat belt. Investigation revealed that Stogsdill's driver's license was suspended for failure to pay child support. Stogsdill was issued a criminal citation to appear in court for DWLS and released at the scene. The Bronco was released to a licensed driver.

Truck vs. Tree

Police BlotterOn 4/16/14 at 7:03 p.m., Alaska State Troopers responded to MP 1 Lakes Boulevard in Big Lake for a report of a single vehicle collision. Investigation revealed Douglas James Pawson, age 26 of Anchorage was operating a 2011 Chevrolet Colorado pick-up truck westbound near MP 1 Lakes Blvd, drove across standing water on the roadway, began to hydroplane and went off the roadway causing the vehicle to collide with a tree. No injuries were reported and Pawson reported to be wearing his seatbelt. The vehicle Pawson was operating was a total loss.

Meadow Lakes Assault

Police BlotterOn April 14th, 2014 at approximately 4:05 p.m., the Alaska State Troopers responded to residence on Captain Circle, Meadow Lakes for a report of a disturbance. Investigation revealed Richard L. Beck, age 48 of Meadow Lakes, caused physical injury to a significant other. Beck was arrested for Assault IV and remanded to the Mat-Su Pretrial Facility where he was held without bail.

Man leads Troopers on 10 mile chase.

Police BlotterOn 04/13/2014 at approximately 11:46 p.m. Alaska State Troopers with the Bureau of Highway Patrol attempted to stop a 1999 Ford Expedition for an equipment violation near the intersection of the Parks Hwy. and Big Lake Rd. outside Wasilla. The vehicle failed to stop and led AST on a 10 mile pursuit that ended near the intersection of the Parks Hwy. and Lucille St. in Wasilla. The driver of the vehicle was identified as Billy J. Bostwick, age 34, of Wasilla. Bostwick was found to be driving the vehicle while under the influence of alcohol and with a revoked driver's license from a previous felony DUI. Bostwick was also found to be in possession of controlled substances. Bostwick was remanded into the Mat-Su Pretrial facility where he was held without bail on charges of Failure to Stop at the Direction of a Peace Officer 1st Degree, Felony DUI, Misconduct Involving a Controlled Substance (2nd, 4th, 5th Degree), Driving While License Revoked, and Assault 3.

No Valid Operator's License

Police BlotterOn 4/12/2014 at approximately 9:48 p.m., AST conducted a traffic stop on a 1993 Nissan Sentra for an equipment violation near the intersection of the Parks Highway and Crusey Street in Wasilla. Investigation revealed Andreas Janko, age 49 of Big Lake, was operating the vehicle with No Valid Operator's License. Janko was issued a criminal citation and given a court date. The Nissan Sentra was released from the scene to a family friend.

Warrant Arrest

Police BlotterOn April 12th, 2014 at approximately 4:46 p.m., the Alaska State Troopers responded to a residence near Wasey Circle, Big Lake for an investigation. Investigation revealed Eron P. Clifford, age 21 of Big Lake, had an outstanding misdemeanor arrest warrant for Failure to Appear for trial call for the original charge of Theft in the Fourth Degree. Clifford was arrested and remanded to the Mat-Su Pretrial Facility where he was held on $100.00 bail.

Houston Resident Ticketed

Police BlotterOn 04/10/14 at approximately 1:42 a.m., Alaska State Troopers conducted a traffic stop on a 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee for a moving violation on E Seldon Road near E Bogard Road in Wasilla. Investigation revealed, Shae Wells, age 27 of Houston, was driving while license revoked and was subsequently issued a misdemeanor criminal citation prior to being released from the scene.

Assault on Troopers

Police Blotter4/9/14, at 8:10 p.m., Trooper Dispatch received a report from a female who reported that she did not want her son, Michael Ingersol, 26 of Wasilla, at her residence and asked AST to remove him. Michael Ingersol was found to be on Felony Probation and had two outstanding felony warrants for probation violations.

Troopers responded to the residence and as they were walking up the driveway, Ingersol started to back down the driveway in a vehicle. Troopers yelled at Ingersol to stop but after initially slowing his vehicle he sped up and drove at both Troopers. Ingersol struck both Troopers with his vehicle and fled the scene. The Troopers were able to reach their vehicles and attempted to pursue Ingersol but lost him after Ingersol made several turns down side streets in the subdivision.

The Troopers drove themselves to the hospital for treatment of injuries sustained in the incident. Examinations showed the Troopers injuries were not debilitating and they were released.

Troopers seek information in Houston Heist.

Police BlotterOn 4/8/2014 at 4:05 p.m., Alaska State Troopers received a report from a resident off of King Arthur Road in Houston about a possible theft. Investigation revealed an unknown suspect(s) unlawfully entered the property and stole two packages of hamburger patties and a package of sausages out of a cooler which was on the front porch.

Alaska State Troopers are requesting anyone with information regarding this theft in Houston to contact the Alaska State Troopers at 745-2131.

Harley Davidson involved in "Plane Crash" that wasn't.

Police BlotterOn 4/8/2014 at approximately 3:54 a.m., the Alaska State Troopers received a report that a man had flagged down a vehicle along the Seward Highway near mile 105 and had stated he had been in a plane crash. The man was transported to an Anchorage hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

Troopers were unable to locate a wreckage of a plane crash and responded to the hospital to interview the injured man. The Anchorage Fire Department had responded to the call as well and were assisting with looking for a wreckage. Troopers identified the man as Denis Straughn, 43 of Kenai.

During the interview it was learned that Straughn had been in a pick-up truck, not an airplane, prior to being located on the side of the highway. It was also reported that he thought he had been with one other person, Harley Davidson. At approximately 6:49 a.m., Troopers were notified by the Anchorage Fire Department that they had located a wrecked pick-up truck down an embankment near mile 99 if the Seward Highway. Two individuals, a man and a woman, were reported to be entrapped.

The individuals were not seriously injured but were unable to get out of the wreckage. Both individuals were extricated and transported to an Anchorage hospital with non-life threatening injuries. On scene investigation and interviews indicate that the driver of the vehicle, identified as Harley W. Davidson, 56 of Anchorage, had fallen asleep while the group was driving from Anchorage to Soldotna. Investigation is ongoing.

Man Fights with Troopers, K-9 Wins.

Police BlotterOn 04/7/2014 at 6:54 p.m., the Alaska State Troopers received a report of a fight in progress involving two males with a possible gun on Pioneer Peak Drive in Wasilla. A responding trooper did not locate any subjects actively fighting but a man that appeared to have recently been in a fight was located on a porch of a residence. During the contact with the Trooper the man began to fight and was reaching into his pants/waist band area. As the fight continued, both the Trooper and the suspect fell from the porch to the driveway.

The trooper, who is a K9 handler, warned the suspect to stop fighting or he may be bit by a K9. The suspect continued to fight and K9 Blazer was deployed, with the use of a remote controller, from the patrol car that was parked a short distance away. K9 Blazer immediately responded and apprehended the suspect.

Another Trooper arrived on scene and both Troopers were able to take the man into custody without further incident. During the fight, the Trooper sustained minor injuries. Medics responded to the scene and transported the suspect to Mat-Su Regional Medical Center in Palmer where he is currently being evaluated and treated for injuries sustained during the K9 apprehension. The Trooper was also treated at Mat-Su Regional and released.

The suspect's name is being withheld until charges are filed against him.

Trooper-Involved Fatal Shooting UPDATE

Police BlotterThe Alaska State Troopers are releasing the name of the Trooper who was involved in the fatal arrest attempt of Aaron Michael Rael-Catholic on 4/2/14 near Homer. The State Trooper was David G. Chaffin, a 5 year veteran of the Alaska State Troopers and currently stationed at the Anchor Point Post. On 4/4/14 the State Medical Examiner's Office determined Rael-Catholic died from a single gunshot wound to the head. A civilian witness at the scene of the event on 4/2/14 observed Rail-Catholic shoot himself with the State Troopers' pistol during the struggle. Investigation by the Alaska Bureau of Investigation is continuing and when the report is complete, it will be provided to the Department of Law's Office of Special Prosecutions and Appeals for review.

Troopers arrest Big Lake man

Police BlotterOn 4/2/14, AST contacted Theodore Knutson, (age 49) of Big Lake at his residence in Big Lake. Knutson had an outstanding bench warrant for failure to appear on charges of assault in the fourth degree. Knutson was arrested and remanded at Mat-Su Pretrial and held on $1000 bail.

Homer man kills self with Troopers firearm

Police BlotterOn 4/2/2014 at approximately 8:17 p.m., Alaska State Troopers received a report of a domestic violence assault in progress. An adult female reported being assaulted by her ex-boyfriend at her residence in the area of East End Road near Homer. The female reported she was able to leave the residence in a private vehicle. An Alaska State Trooper responded.

The adult male assailant, subsequently odentified as Aaron Michael Rael-Catholic, age 24 of Homer, rammed his vehicle into the female victim's vehicle at about Mile 4 of East End Road. Rael-Catholic exited his vehicle and a struggle ensued between him and the Alaska State Trooper. During the Trooper's attempt to arrest the assailant, a deployment of both pepper spray and a taser were attempted.
