Hatcher Pass -- East side fully open to snowmachines

RecreationThe winter storm over the weekend has allowed the full opening of Hatcher Pass – East side to snowmachine use, but all recreationists are advised to use extreme caution due to the unstable snowpack.

The opening includes all areas normally open to snowmobiles. Park staff has determined that sufficient snow cover now exists to protect underlying vegetation in the area.

Hatcher Pass -- East side opens to snowmachines on limited basis

Recreation(Palmer, AK) – Recent snowfall and a consolidating snowpack have allowed the limited opening of Hatcher Pass – East side to snowmachine use immediately. The opening pertains ONLY to the Fishhook Parking lot west and along the snowmachine corridor, up and over the summit to the west side of Hatcher Pass. Park staff has determined that sufficient snow cover now exists to protect underlying vegetation in the area.

Summit Lake State Recreation Site is also open for snowmachines but the Gold Mint and Archangel trailheads remain closed to snowmachines at this time. However, another storm is expected Friday night and additional snow may result in further openings.

Trails advisory board to meet Feb. 3-4 in Anchorage

Recreation(Anchorage, AK) – The Outdoor Recreational Trails Advisory Board will meet Feb 3-4 in Anchorage to consider grant applications. The public is welcome to attend the meeting which will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. both days in Suite 1270 of the Atwood Building, located at 550 West 7th Ave.

During the meeting, the ORTAB will evaluate grant proposals for the Recreational Trails Program and the Land and Water Conservation Fund. The board will provide recommendations to the director of the Division of Parks and Outdoor Recreation, who will make final decisions on funding for those applications.

Northern Lights activity will be high this weekend

RecreationThe Geophysical Institute is predicting a high probablity of seeing Northern Lights displays this weekend. The weather is predicted to be clear.

MSB 2015 Trailhead Parking Pass

RecreationStarting January 1, 2015, the Mat-Su Borough's Trailhead Parking Passes will be issued on a calendar basis (January - December). The new, non-transferable window decals will be available to purchase year round. After January 2015, and for the remainder of 2015 only, the parking passes will be offered for a prorated price.

Nancy Lake State Recreation Area and Denali State Park open to snowmachines

Recreation(Palmer, AK) – Recent snowfall has allowed the opening of Nancy Lake State Recreation Area and Denali State Park to snowmachine use as of Monday, Dec. 29. Park staff has determined that sufficient snow cover now exists to protect underlying vegetation in the parks.

Caution is advised in all areas as lake ice is variable. Thin ice and open water exists in streams and river ice is unstable or flowing.

Remember, all snowmobiles must be registered with the Division of Motor Vehicles to legally operate on public land.

167 Alaskans win opportunity to stake remote recreational cabin sites

RecreationA total of 167 Alaskans won the opportunity to stake state land for recreational cabin sites during last week’s Remote Recreational Cabin Sites lottery drawing.

Results from the Dec. 11 drawing are available online at http://landsales.alaska.gov or by calling the DNR Public Information Centers in Anchorage (269-8400) or Fairbanks (451-2705).

Alaska State Parks increases fees

RecreationFees for overnight camping and boat launching and the cost of annual passes for parking and boat launching at Alaska state park facilities will increase on Jan. 1.

An updated list of state park fees and passes is at http://dnr.alaska.gov/parks/asp/alask...rkfees.pdf . Annual passes for the 2015 calendar year are available for purchase at https://dnr.alaska.gov/parks/Passes.cfm and will be sold at current prices through Dec. 31.

Nancy Lake Parkway closed to street vehicles for winter season

Recreation(Willow, AK) – The gate at Mile 2.2 of the Nancy Lake Parkway, located in the Nancy Lake State Recreation Area, is now closed to street-registered vehicles due to winter conditions.

The parkway beyond the gate leading to the South Rolly campground is not maintained in the winter but is used as a multi-use trail for skiing, dog-mushing, foot traffic and snowmachines.
