Big Head Regatta on Big Lake

SportsSubmitted by Marietta Hall

On Saturday September 12th the Anchorage Rowing Association is hosting The Inaugural “Big Head”. This is a "head-style" race meaning that boats will be released one at a time through the starting buoys as opposed to a sprint race like you might see on Olympic coverage where boats are lined up side by side and start together. The 5 kilometer race will start in front of the North Shore campground and then wrap around Long Island and finish in the bay in front of the campground.

Teams attending are Anchorage Rowing Association, Kenai Crewsers from Seward, AK, and Alaska Midnight Sun Rowers from Kenai/Soldotna.

Racing will start at 10AM and conclude at 1:30 with a BBQ at the North Shore Campground.

Big Lake boats are encouraged to pull up to the course and watch and cheer the teams from Anchorage and the Kenai Peninsula with competitors from ages 13 to 67 competing in the smallest singles to the largest 8 rower shells. If you are boating in the area please be aware that boat wakes can be dangerous for us. Let kids know to resist the urge to water ski off the tips of our blades.

Big Lake Broomball

SportsSubmitted by Dave: "A few of us want to start a Broomball Team, and play on the ice. I know, should have thought of it sooner. Anyone interested post in this thread, maybe we can get a discussion going.

For those who don't know, Broomball is like Hockey, but without skates or sticks. And with a small ball instead of a puck. It's fun for all ages and abilities." Here's some more detailed info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Broomball

The Northern Lights 300 Sled Dog Race has been cancelled.

SportsFrom their website: "The Northern Lights 300 Race Committee regretfully must inform you of the cancellation of the 2014 race. After attempts to wait out the weather for more favorable conditions, current trail and checkpoint reports, and extended weather forecasts, we feel that it is not in the best interest of the dogs, volunteers, and mushers to conduct a race.

We are in the process of seeing what the race committee can do to accommodate all that signed up and made commitments to our 2014 race. Please monitor your email and social media for updates.

Thank you for your patience and understanding and we truly appreciate your dedication to, and support of our race."
